We’ve all seen it a hundred times: The family roadster tooling down the highway, fishing boat in tow, stuffed full of everything but the kitchen sink, including a pile of mish-mashed BC-219bicycles that are so entangled, you wonder how they’ll ever get unsnarled. Instant trailer, right? Not so fast. Throwing bikes into a boat to take up north can be damaging to the bikes AND an expensive boat, too. With a good bicycle carrier, though, transporting bikes can be quick, easy and safe.

Most bicycle carriers can be classified by their design for securing the bike (by the frame, wheel mount or fork mount) and also by the way in which the carrier itself attaches to your vehicle. There are multitudes of different styles and sizes of bike carriers on the market, so it can be tough to figure out which will work best for you. Here are a few questions to get you thinking about what style and features best suit your needs.

What type of bike(s) are you hauling, and what kind of biking do you do?

If you are fairly hardcore about your biking or even at a competitive level and invest a lot of time and money into your bikes, chances are, you’re going to want to invest in a top quality bike carrier like a Thule or Yakima. A high-end carbon frame bike or a mountain bike, for example, may be best transported using a rooftop, fork mounted carrier for the greatest stability. If, on the other hand, your greater need is to carry enough bikes for the entire family as you’re headed for a camping weekend, there are economical, multi-bike cradle-style carriers like some of the styles by Rage Powersports that have extensions to accommodate more bicycles. Similarly, a wheel mount model is ideal for mountain bikes or bicycles with a step-through frame (a “women’s” bike), but you also have the option of the cradle-style if you use a special bike frame adapter that creates a horizontal tie-down point across the frame.

What type of vehicle do you drive? Is it an SUV, car, truck or camper? Does the vehicle have two doors, four doors or a rear hatch?

Your vehicle often determines which bike carrier will work for you based on the carrier’s mounting system.  Here is a list of some popular “categories” of bicycle carriers based on how they attach to a vehicle:

Hitch Mounthitch-bike-carrier-11
Roof Mount / Upright
Hatchback / Trunk
Towing
Spare Tire
Ball Mount
Truck Bed
Tow Behind
Bumper Mount (for campers / RVs)

In looking at these categories, the rooftop bike carrier is a great solution for cars and SUVs, unless lifting a bike to that height is an issue. The hatchback / trunk style is ideal for people who aren’t hitting the road with their bikes super-frequently because it’s so easy to install and remove; yet, if you need access to the trunk, it might not be the most convenient alternative.

Does your vehicle have a hitch? If so, what size is the receiver?

There are lots of options here, in terms of how the bikes are secured, whether by wheel mount, fork mount or a cradle that holds the frame. Most hitch mount bicycle carriers will fit either trunk-bike-racka 1-1/4” or 2” receiver, but you should double check the specs of the model you are considering. As a bonus, many of these have a tilt-down feature that gives access to the trunk space or will fold up when not in use.

Does your vehicle have a roof rack or bars on it? Is there a sun roof or anything else mounted on top?

This is a question for people considering a roof mount style of carrier; you’ll need those to secure the carrier. If, however, your vehicle doesn’t already have some type of racking on it, separate cargo bars are also available. A sunroof, on the other hand, could interfere with some styles of rooftop bike carriers.

What other features are important to you?

There are tons of accessory items out there for bike racks that don’t already come with the features that you want. Do you want to be able to lock your bikes onto the carrier? Or maybe a rooftop carrier suits you, but the reach is just a little too much. Locking cables, wheels steps, hitch adapters, locking hitch pins, frame adapters, an anti-tilt device for the hitch receiver – all available to make your bike carrier perfectly suited to your needs.

Enjoy the cycling season this year, and keep your bikes in good shape with a proper bicycle carrier. Where are you headed next with your bikes in tow?

I was doing some reading recently about the shopping habits of people who buy online…Which means just about all of us these days, but I wanted actual facts and statistics, so I decided to do a bit of searching.  I was hoping to find something specific about the mindset of people who shop sales and clearances, figuring this is a “type” of shopper with their own unique set of twitches and triggers.

I have a sister who is definitely that type. With everything. She finds unbelievable discounts on clothing for her kids, entertainment coupons galore, even half off a 50 pound bag of the best oatmeal I’ve ever eaten (50 lbs!). She works very, very hard at finding those deals, and she succeeds.online-shopping-photo

While I did unearth some interesting information, I was unable to find that single, awesome infographic that sums up at a glance the psyche of the bargain hunter. What I found instead was research revealing details like this:

Apparently, men respond much more frequently to a price that is listed in the color red. Not sure if that translates to prices listed on a website (vs. in-person signage at a brick and mortar), but I thought that was interesting.

Or graphs illustrating that Kuwait is the e-shopping leader in the Middle East and North Africa.

And you wouldn’t believe the crazy, spaghetti bowl flow charts that mapped out processes I couldn’t even begin to explain.

If you are already shopping on DiscountRamps.com, I encourage you to stop at our great Clearance Center. We have dozens of products at reduced prices, from pet items to motorcycle stands and accessories, to bicycle carriers and many other items in between. And what we have up on clearance changes regularly – quite frequently, in fact – so it’s worth the occasional check-in just to see the latest and greatest…No more rooting around for the good deals is needed. Just click here. Happy bargain hunting!Clearance

For anyone who uses a power wheelchair or power scooter to get around, you are well aware of the significant role it plays in your freedom and independence. But the chair itself is only part of the equation. Unless you are OK with being limited to very short, local trips within “wheeling” distance of your home (and who wants that—we’ve got places to go!), you need some way to transport the chair or scooter to that further destination first.

One option available for transporting mobility equipment is a hitch-mounted carrier (as opposed to other transport options, such as a lift for a car or van, using ramps for the bed of a pickup truck or hooking up a tow-behind trailer). But even if you’ve already drilled the decision down to go with a hitch carrier for your wheelchair or power chair, there are requirements and features to consider before determining the model you want in addition to a little bit of homework before placing an order.

The SC500-V3 Power Wheelchair and Scooter Carrier is a manual mobility carrier with a built-in loading ramp.

The SC500-V3 Power Wheelchair and Scooter Carrier is a manual mobility carrier with a built-in loading ramp.

Manual Hitch-Mount Carriers

Hitch-mount mobility carriers come in two main categories, manual and electric. A manual hitch carrier for power chairs and power wheelchairs has a built-in ramp of some sort, either a tilting mechanism of the entire holding platform of the carrier, or an unfolding ramp design, that allows you to drive your mobility device right onto the carrier. Many models also include a fold-up feature that allows you to pivot the carrier upright and flush with the rear of the vehicle when not in use so you don’t have to deal with the extra length the carrier adds to your car or truck.

It should be noted that the chair should never be occupied during this loading process. No daredevils, please!

Electric Hitch-Mount Carriers

A powered wheelchair lift is super-convenient for loading and unloading your power chair or scooter by elevating and lowering the platform with an easy flip of a switch.

EML-350 Powered Hitch Carrier Lift raises and lowers with the flip of a switch.

The EML-350 Powered Hitch Carrier Lift raises and lowers with the flip of a switch.

With the carrier lowered to ground level, you simply drive on board, no ramps are needed. In a lowered position, this usually allows access to the vehicle’s rear cargo area (like on an SUV) without having to remove the hitch lift altogether. Similarly, many of the electric versions also fold into an upright position for low-profile travel when not in use or to fit into a parking space or garage.

Given the differences of both types of hitch-mounted carriers for power wheelchairs and power chairs, you might wonder why wouldn’t you just go with the powered version? Less work, right? But don’t assume the motorized model is the better option for everyone!

A Checklist

Here are some questions to ask yourself and a few pieces of information you’ll need to gather together to help determine what kind of hitch mobility carrier is the best solution for you.

  • First and foremost: The physical requirements. Does your vehicle have a 2” Class III/IV hitch that most mobility carriers require? What is the hitch weight limit and hauling weight capacity of your vehicle? If you’re unsure, talk to your dealer or mechanic, and they should be able to help out.
  • What is the hitch height of your vehicle? Some vehicles, especially with the extra weight of a carrier and mobility device, may bottom out, so the hitch needs to be high enough to clear inclines, bumps, etc. However, in some cases, the addition of air shocks or stiffer springs may help to properly support the additional weight and prevent sagging.
  • What are the dimensions of your power wheelchair or power scooter? Measure the length, width (from outside tire to outside tire) and the total weight, including the batteries. Many carriers have a lift capacity of at least 350 lbs, but you should check the specifications of the particular lift you are considering.
  • What is your budget? A manual mobility carrier is going to be more pocketbook-friendly than the electric versions, usually a significant difference; but what is the ease and convenience worth to you?
  • What are the physical capabilities of the person who will be loading and unloading the mobility device? Remember that some manual hitch carriers for wheelchairs require the operator to be able to lift and lower a ramp weighing 30 or more pounds. On the other hand, does this person have sufficient manual dexterity to operate the controls of an electric mobility carrier?

Final Thoughts

With the purchase of either style power wheelchair or power chair hitch carrier, you will likely need a good quality set of cam- or ratchet-style tie down straps to secure the mobility unit to the carrier, while some carriers come with retractable ratcheting tie downs already built-in. Either way, make sure you don’t skimp on strong, durable tie downs because they are vital to ensuring your transport goes smoothly!

Additional options or accessories may be available with some wheelchair carriers, such as soft or hard covers to protect the wheelchair in transit, or additional taillights or license plate mounting.

Insurance coverage questions should be directed to your health care provider. Also, there are limited rebate programs available through select car manufacturers, who should be contacted directly for details on eligibility.

When you are ready to order your hitch-mount power wheelchair or power scooter carrier, be sure to contact a reputable carrier distributor. They have a staff of experts who will walk you through this maze of considerations, and, armed with the valuable information you’ve prepared ahead of time, you will find the best hitch-mounted mobility carrier for you.
